The John Chard Decoration and Medal were instituted in 1952 to recognise service in the South African Citizen Force. Although the medal had no direct connection to the Anglo-Zulu War, it was named after Lieutenant John Chard RE, the senior British commander at Rorke’s Drift, and the image on the front of both represents Rorke’s Drift. The medal, usually cast in bronze, was awarded for twelve years’ service, and was also numbered on the rim.
